Justice Minister holds meeting on drug problem, emphasizes community drug addiction treatment and intercepts drug transport to the South

Ministry of Justice, Minister of Justice orders urgent treatment of drug addicts in the community, X-rays of children 16 years and older, using Roi Et model to expand results in solving drug problems.

Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong, Minister of Justice, chaired the 2/2024 meeting of the Committee for Monitoring and Expediting the Operation of Preventing, Suppressing and Solving Drug Problems, along with Dr. Prommin Lertsuridej, Secretary-General to the Prime Minister, Pol. Lt. Gen. Phanurat Lakboon, Secretary-General of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, Pol. Lt. Gen. Samran Nuanma, Assistant Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police, and representatives from relevant agencies to follow up on the results of the urgent operation to prevent, suppress and solve drug problems for 3 months in 25 provinces and the overall picture nationwide.

The Minister of Justice reiterated the Prime Minister’s order on solving the drug problem, especially the public’s confidence, who are still concerned about drug users
in the community, even though many drug arrests have been made. He ordered inspections of all areas, x-rays for drug users and dealers in the community, especially youth aged 16 and over, and to use the ‘Roi Et Model’ to expand the drug problem.

In addition, bring drug users into the treatment process, both those who have been ordered by the court to be on probation in drug cases, more than 100,000 people, and drug offenders who are detained in prison without receiving treatment, to reduce the rate of recidivism, which is currently as high as 61 percent. Cooperation is requested from public health agencies, police, military, and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) to strictly block drug transport into the southern region, which has been found to be increasing.
